At first, the Hotel got its name from the company that erected the building: Dominion Fish and Fruit Limited. In 1912, the nine-story structure was the capital’s tallest and most modern; its style was inspired by an American architectural school in Chicago.
At that time, Dominion Fish and Fruit was in an enviable position due to its location on St. Pierre Street – considered to be the Wall Street of Quebec City. The company shared the main artery with prestigious freestone buildings – featuring architecture unique to the city – that housed a collection of banks, brokers, insurance companies, notaries, lawyers and merchants of all kinds.

Since Quebec City was the last stop for ships heading off to England, scores of merchants and traders came to the city to conduct business. Just off the port, St. Pierre Street was a major commercial thoroughfare linking Place Royale and St. Paul Street. Dominion Fish and Fruit wisely decided to take up residence there to increase its exposure and prestige.

Today, the name of the company that gave rise to the building is still found on its façade; and that’s not all. Since 2002, the Hotel Dominion has occupied the former Banque d’Hochelaga (Hochelaga Bank) building next door, which was erected in 1901-1902. Interestingly, the doors from the old vaults, manufactured by Ontario company Goldie & McCulloch Co. Ltd, have been reinstalled on each floor and a floor plan of the old bank is on display for the public. The conference room, located inside what was the bank, still has the original wainscoting; while outside, at the top of the building there’s a beautiful parapet with a lovely railing.

When you’re walking down St. Pierre Street, keep your eyes peeled for these remnants from another era. A lot of care has been lavished on the smallest details – a philosophy the Groupe Germain unfailingly maintains in all of its establishments!

Because Quebec City is almost synonymous with Samuel de Champlain (its founder) as well as with the St. Lawrence River, the Quebec government decided to present the Promenade Samuel-De Champlain riverside park to its capital city as a gift. The Promenade stretches over 2.5 km, from the Quai des Cageux (near the bridges) to the Sillery area. Accessible on foot, by car, bus or bicycle, the Promenade outlines the history of the area along its magnificent grounds, including: pavilions, gardens, art pieces, sports fields and waterways.

The Promenade’s official inauguration will take place on June 24, with a formal ceremony, exciting activities and a show performed on the river bank. Plus, the whole summer will be filled with colourful events, including a skiff competition and a massive sea shanty festival!

The Simons family, established for generations in Quebec City and renowned for their thriving chain of stores, has also presented an anniversary gift to the city. It consists of a forgotten treasure from France – a 19th century fountain commissioned by the mayor of Bordeaux to celebrate the arrival of running water in the city. Until 1960, the Fountain adorned a charming lane in Tourny.

The Fountain was disassembled and repatriated to l’île d’Orléans, where artisans then restored it. In May 2007, the Fountain will begin its final voyage when it will be relocated, in multiple stages, to Parliament Hill. With its beautiful streaming jets of water, marine-themed ornamentation and exquisite lighting scheme, the Tourny Fountain is definitely worth a visit!
