Groupe Germain Hotels go smoke-free

On the occasion of the opening of the first ALT Hotel

As Groupe Germain gets ready to officially open the first hotel in its new ALT Hotels banner, the company has decided to offer its guests a smoke-free environment in all its properties. As of today, all Groupe Germain establishments (Hôtel Le Germain Montréal, Hôtel Le Germain Toronto, Hôtel Germain des Prés in Québec City, and Hôtel Dominion 1912 in Old Québec) will be entirely smoke-free.

“People are becoming increasingly aware of the negative effects of tobacco use and are looking for healthier environments. Harmony and serenity are important to us, and we believe that we can better meet the needs of our guests by eliminating our ‘smoking’ rooms and offering a totally smoke-free environment. Besides, the demand for ‘smoking’ rooms has dropped dramatically in our establishments over the past few years. From now on, we will provide a healthier environment not only for our guests, but also for our employees. After all, everyone’s health is affected,” said Groupe Germain co-president Christiane Germain.

An industry trend
The decision by Groupe Germain to offer a fully smoke-free environment in its hotels is in step with a major industry trend. In fact, several independent hotels and major hotel chains in North America and around the world have already made the switch. The initiative comes in the wake of decision by the Government of Québec to ban smoking in bars and restaurants. “Since this legislation came into effect, the number of regular smokers has dropped considerably and, consequently, so has the demand for ‘smoking’ rooms” stated Germain.
